Last week, I talked about politics and its importance in society. Today I want to tell you why politics divide.
The idea for this video comes from a book which I read in 2017. It's called The Righteous Mind: Why are good people divided by politics and religion by Jonathan Haidt. But I will also talk about my own ideas and opinions.
Jonathan Haidt says that there are 6 moral foundations: 1. Care/Harm 2. Fairness/Cheating 3. Loyalty/Betrayal 4. Authority/Subversion 5. Sanctity/Degradation 6. Liberty/Oppression
We are all right and we are all wrong. There is no absolute morality. We should also look at morality from a historical point of view. What was moral in the past, may not be moral today. And what was immoral in the past, may be moral today.
The Golden Rule tells us that we should do to others what we want to be done to us. It is wrong. The Platinum Rule is better. Do to others what they want to be done to them.
Change takes time, we should be able to understand the opinions of others, there are good ideas from both sides of an argument. Personally, when it comes to social issues, I am very liberal, I tend to be a democrat. But when it comes to economic issues, I lean towards the right, the republicans.
